The maneki neko or lucky cat, is one the best-known Japanese amulets outside the country’s borders, although it is often thought to be of Chinese origin.
Legend has it that a feudal lord was surprised by a storm and took refuge under a tree, near the Gotokuji temple. While he was waiting for the storm to pass, he saw a cat waving him to come closer to the door of the temple. The cat seemed to be lifting one of its legs, while it shook it. The man was so surprised that he approached it to see it better, when, suddenly, a ray fell on the tree that had given him shelter.
Grateful for saving his life, the man donated rice fields and farmland to the temple. If you ever go to Gotokuji Temple in Tokyo, you will see lots of lucky cats.
